Unit I Reflection Paper
In your textbook, you read about Sir Robert Peel, credited for being the founder of modern policing. Your assignment is to
review Peel’s Nine Principles and reflect on how each of them has affected the way police officers handle their jobs today.
Do you believe that police officers today still uphold those principles? Please explain why you feel this way.
In addition, reflect on the changes that have occurred in policing throughout the past 60 years in the United States. Also,
include information regarding the roles of English policing, expansion, and development and how they contributed to
American policing.
Your reflection paper should consist of at least three pages.

Unit III PowerPoint Presentation
For this assignment, you will be asked to put yourself in the role of trainer for your police department. You have been
asked to provide a PowerPoint presentation to new employees in which you discuss the role of police, police discretion,
and ethics. Seeing that these employees are new to your department, you want to be sure to convey clear and concise
information at the initial orientation for employment.
In order to prepare for this assignment, you will need to review Chapter 5, “The Police Role and Police Discretion,” and
Chapter 8, “Police Ethics and Police Deviance,” in your textbook. For this assignment, you will prepare a three-part
PowerPoint presentation. The assignment requires a minimum of 10 slides, not including a title slide and reference slide.
You must reference a minimum of one additional source in addition to the textbook.

Part I consists of a discussion about the role of police in society. The assignment requires the discussion of the
role of police and the two major views of policing. Also in this section, be sure to discuss the goals that should be
addressed through policing and the methods used to achieve these goals through police duties.
Part II consists of a discussion of police discretion, which is a major challenge that U.S. police face in today’s

society. You will need to discuss what police discretion is, how police discretion is exercised, and why this
discretion is exercised.
Part III consists of defining and describing ethics as they relate to policing.

Unit IV Article Critique
Using the CSU Online Library, please locate an article regarding entrapment. Your article should be no more than five
years old and should come from a professional or scholarly journal. After reading the article and briefly summarizing the
purpose for the study, address the following questions:






What the main point of the article?
Who is the intended audience?
Do the arguments offered by the author(s) support the article’s main point?
What evidence supports the main point?
What is your opinion of the article? Do you agree with the article’s findings?
What evidence, either from the textbook or additional sources, supports your opinion?

Your paper should be a minimum of three pages in length, not counting the title page and references. Use APA format for
your paper, including all references and in-text citations.

Unit V Case Study
In order to prepare for this case study, you will need to review Chapter 13, “Police and the Law,” in your textbook. In your
case study, you will address the following:



Analyze and explain the use of the exclusionary rule by the Supreme Court of the United States.
Define how the exclusionary rule has affected the use of evidence acquired from police search and seizure cases.
Compare and contrast each of the following cases and the effects that the ruling decision by the Supreme Court
has had on evidence obtained from police search and seizure.
What constitutes a reasonable search (include information regarding the ways that the police can use probable
cause and execute a search warrant)?
How is search and seizure governed by the Fourth Amendment?
How do you feel that the police could have completed their searches in these cases more efficiently?

Base your case study on the following three cases:



Weeks v. United States (1914)—Exclusionary rule applied to federal law enforcement agencies
Rochin v. California (1952)—Exclusionary rule applied to all cases involving extreme police misconduct
Mapp v. Ohio (1961)—Exclusionary rule applied to all law enforcement agencies (local, state, and federal)

The completed assignment must be a minimum of five pages in length, not including the title page and references pages.
You must include at least two references, one of which may be your textbook. The entire case study assignment must be
written following APA style guidelines. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of
sources are to be followed.

Unit VI Reflection Paper
One of the most controversial methods of ending job discrimination is through the concept of affirmative action. In this
reflection paper assignment, discuss your feelings about the use of affirmative action in a law enforcement organization.
Do you believe that affirmative action is justified or unjustified? Explain why you feel this way, and use specific examples
to illustrate your point.
Your reflection paper should be three pages in length.

Unit VII Reflection Paper

Community policing and problem-solving policing has become an integral element of policing in the 21st century. In order
to prepare for this assignment, you will need to review Chapter 12, “Community Policing: The Debate Continues,” in your
textbook. Taking into consideration what you have learned regarding community policing and problem-solving policing,
you will write a paper reflecting what community policing and problem-solving policing entails and explain any benefits and
drawbacks of using these strategies.
Your essay must be at least three pages in length.

Unit VIII Reflection Paper
In this reflection paper, discuss the differences and similarities between the four theories of punishment. Then, discuss
how educational programs within prisons can function as rehabilitation for inmates.
Be sure to include the constraints of establishing these education programs as well as the components and benefits
involved in developing and implementing these programs.
Your reflection paper should be at least three pages in length.
