HISTORY 68: WRITING ASSIGNMENT #2
Answer the following question in a short essay (1-2 pages handwritten both sides, or typed).
“Sarah Hale and the Ladies Magazine” (Women and the American Experience Chapter 5, pages 103-118) follows the career of a female publisher, editor, and writer of the nineteenth century. In your essay, describe the ideology she represented in her Ladies Magazine and later in Godey’s Lady’s Book.
How did Sarah Hale define “woman’s sphere” and proper roles for women in her Magazine? What did she consider to be appropriate activities and behavior for women?
How did her magazine change after she “consolidated” with Philadelphia publisher Louis Godey in the late 1830s?
Finally, do you think that Sarah Hale’s point of view still exists in American culture today? Where have you seen it, and how is it expressed?
Please be careful not to plagiarize or copy directly from your textbook.
Try to explain your ideas and examples in your own words.
Do not simply tell me “according to Sarah Hale, ‘women’s sphere’ was a value system”!
If you do quote from the book, try to limit your quote to one sentence or less and be sure to use “quotation marks” around the quote, followed by the pg. number in (parentheses). For example:
…As Sarah Hale wrote in her magazine, men were certainly “the grosser sex” in the nineteenth century (112).
