ASSESSMENT DETAILS AND INSTRUCTIONS
TASK BACKGROUND
Managers within the hospitality industry are required to make decisions and solve problems. When
resolving complex problems managers may be required to undertake research and develop possible
solutions. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to undertake a project which will assist
you in developing the skills and knowledge required to successfully undertake this role.
Select one research topic from the list included in the appendix. As you select a topic you may consider
how the topic aligns with your future career aspirations, how it may assist in developing your
capabilities or competencies or how it aligns with your placement.
If you would like to undertake an alternative research project which is directly related to your
professional career plan or the industry placement provider you must seek approval from the course
coordinator.
Please note the assignment is separated into two parts with
separate submission dates.
PART A: LITERATURE REVIEW 500 WORDS (10%)
When a manager is looking for potential solutions to problems in the workplace, they may find
undertaking a literature review useful as it keeps them up to date with what is current in their field.
For the first part of this assignment you are required to undertake a literature review related to the
topic you have chosen.
PART B: PROJECT REPORT (INCLUDES THE LITERATURE REVIEW WORD COUNT FROM PART A) (40%)
For the second stage of your research project you are required to collect and analyse data related to
the topic you have selected. To complete this task you are required to write a written report which
includes the following:
1. Introduction
This section introduces the topic you are investigating
2. Background to the organisation
Describes the organisation where you have undertaken the research project
3. Literature review
Discuss the background theory to your research project
4. Data collection
Explain the information you have used in this research project

5. Data analysis
Explain what you have found e.g. what do the reviews tell you, what did you observe and how
are these similar or different
6. Discussion
Reflect on the findings of your analysis making connections to the academic theories/concepts
you wrote about in your literature review.
7. Recommendations
Provide recommendations to the organisation.
8. Concludes with a reflection on how you may use these findings in your future career
Data collection sources may include: interviews with your supervisor/manager; interviews with
colleagues; observations; secondary sources such as Expedia, brochures, websites
