This assignment tasks you with conducting a rhetorical analysis of a song and write a 3-4 page (double spaced) essay describing what you found. A rhetorical analysis is a break down of an artifact’s content in a way that sheds light on something your reader might not have seen. While a synopsis of the song itself should be included, this paper should not be a 3 page summery. Limit your synopsis to a single paragraph and focus the rest of your essay on your analysis. You may decide how you approach your analysis, but here are some things to consider:
– Context – Was there anything going on in the world when the song was released that might shed some light on the deeper meaning? Was there anything going on in the artist’s life or career that you might take into account?
– Hidden Meanings – What metaphorical or analogical references does the song contain that might be important for your reader to understand the deeper meaning? Has the writer/artist said anything about the content of the song that most people may not know?
– Persuasive Content – Does the average listener receive information about how the world is supposed to be from the song? Does the song reinforce any stereotypes or norms? Is the song secretly trying to sell something?
