IAH 207: ANALYSIS PAPER 1
Your first analysis paper this semester will be on the MODERN FICTION texts (The Plague, “Mask of the Red
Death,” “Night Surf
,” One Flea Spare) You have two options:
A. Select TWO of assigned readings of this course and analyze specific moments in the text where the
metaphor of the plague/ disease is employed. Closely analyze the passages in terms of word choice,
imagery, and/ or technique. What does “plague” mean for these texts? How are they similar—and more
importantly—how are they
different and what does that difference imply about the meaning of the texts
and/or plague-metaphor)? The goal of your paper should be to articulate how the metaphor of the plague
informs the overall deeper meaning of the texts.

the metaphor of the plague informs/ contributes to this theme and the overall meaning of the texts.
Your paper should:
Have an introduction that clearly states the topic of the paper, the texts under discussion, and makes a
strong thesis/ argument (observation + interpretative claim);
Provide a close-reading and analysis of specific moments OR a specific theme/ pattern, offering direct
quotes from the play as examples;
Offer guiding topic sentences for each paragraph, to help your reader follow your argument

Quote the texts correctly (following MLA guidelines, giving page numbers—consult PurdueOWL OR
Keys for Writers for help)
