Task 1

Learning outcome/s: LO1 Understand macronutrients and the macronutrient requirements of different sport and exercise participants.

Your mentor has asked you to prepare a multimedia presentation about macronutrients and the requirements of different sport and exercise participants, to support her at the conference.
Grading opportunities: 1.1; 1.2; 1.3; 1.4; M1, D1
Specific requirements:
Your multimedia presentation will:
    Discuss the structure, function and sources of macronutrients. (1.1)
    Analyse the RDA of macronutrients for different sport and exercise participants. (According to gender, age and level of physical activity). (1.2)
    Discuss internal energy reserves e.g. endogenous (internal) energy reserves (location and extent – liver and muscle glycogen, blood glucose and fat deposits in peripheral adipose tissue); energy balance (tools used in the assessment of energy intake and expenditure); aerobic and anaerobic metabolic pathway (energy production through metabolism of carbohydrate and fat). (1.3)

    Assess the relative proportion of substrates used at rest and during different intensities of exercise e.g. direct or indirect calorimetry.  (1.4)
    Show evidence that an effective approach to study and research has been applied when preparing your presentation (M1).
    At the end of your presentation you will need to provide a conclusion, synthesising and justifying the information provided throughout your presentation (D1).

The presentation will cover the following criteria:
1.1 discuss the structure, function and sources of macronutrients
1.2 analyse the RDA of macronutrients for different sport and exercise participants
1.3 discuss internal energy reserves
1.4 assess the relative proportion of substrates used at rest and during different intensities of exercise
M1 Identify and apply strategies to find appropriate solutions
D1 Use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions

Task 2
Learning outcome/s: LO2 Understand the micronutrient requirements of different sport and exercise participants and related issues

Assessment criteria:  2.1; 2.2; 2.3; M2;D2
Relate the task to the scenario/Assignment Background
To support your mentor at the conference you will need to create a poster demonstrating understanding of the micronutrient requirements of different sport and exercise participants and related issues
Grading opportunities: :  2.1; 2.2; 2.3; M2; D2
Specific requirements:
Your poster presentation will:
    Discuss the functions and sources of micronutrients (2.1) and analyse the RDA of micronutrients for different sport and exercise participants (2.2)
Must include: vitamins (water-soluble, fat-soluble, functions, dietary sources, phytochemicals, RDA); minerals (macro minerals, micro minerals, functions and dietary sources, RDA); functions (supplementation, free radicals, antioxidants, enzymes, coenzymes, cofactors).

    Discuss the symptoms and consequences of micronutrient deficiency in certain athletic groups, occurrence of injuries and medical conditions with particular reference to specific groups e.g. stress fractures, osteoporosis in female distance runners, ballerinas, gymnasts (2.3)
    Demonstrate that a range of sources of information has been used when preparing your poster presentation ( M2)
    Independence has been demonstrated when preparing and presenting your poster presentation (D2).
The report will cover the following criteria:
2.1 Discuss the functions and sources of micronutrients
2.2 Analyse the RDA of micronutrients for different sport and exercise participants
2.3 Discuss the symptoms and consequences of micronutrient deficiency
M2: Select / design and apply appropriate methods and techniques
D2: Take responsibility for managing and organising activities
Task 3
Learning outcome/s: LO3 Be able to advise sport and exercise participants on nutritional strategies to improve performance
Assessment criteria:3.1; 3.2; 3.3; 3.3; 3.4; M3; D3
Relate the task to the scenario/Assignment Background
Your mentor has asked you to take part in the conference and hold a talk advising sport and exercise participants on nutritional strategies to improve their performance.

Grading opportunities: 3.1; 3.2; 3.3; 3.3; 3.4; M3; D3
Specific requirements:
As part of your talk at the conference you will:
    Discuss carbohydrates ingestion such as amount and rate of CHO supplementation, influence of CHO ingestion on muscle glycogen use, effect of elevated blood glucose and plasma insulin levels on endurance athletes.  You would also need to discuss fluid replacement such as types of sport drinks and their effect on performance (3.1).
    Discuss the optimisation of muscle and hepatic glycogen stores such as glycogen loading and super-compensation. In your discussion also consider the effect of different types of CHO, the environmental conditions and type/intensity of exercise on muscle/hepatic glycogen stores (3.2).
    Discuss considerations for designing nutritional strategies to improve performance. You would need to consider the following: causes of fatigue during prolonged exercise, timing of CHO supplementation, solution formulation, pre-exercise meal/s, hypoglycaemic rebound and impact on CNS function, importance of adequate hydration before exercise, post-exercise meal (3.3).
    At the talk you would need to bring a copy of a planned nutritional strategy for a selected sport and exercise participant to improve performance and share with the audience (3.4).
    At the talk you would need to bring a copy of the guidelines you have created  for optimal rehydration for sport and exercise participants (3.5)
    You will need to make sure that you communicate your findings appropriately to the audience and that appropriate media have been used (M3).
    Demonstrate that receptiveness to new research information in sports nutrition is evident (D3).
The report will cover the following criteria:
3.1 Discuss carbohydrates ingestion and fluid replacement.
3.2 Discuss the optimisation of muscle and hepatic glycogen stores
3.3 Discuss considerations for designing nutritional strategies to improve performance
3.4 Plan a nutritional strategy for a selected sport and exercise participant to improve performance
3.5 Create guidelines for optimal rehydration for sport and exercise participants
M3: Present and communicate appropriate findings
D3: Demonstrate convergent / lateral / creative thinking
