utilization best practices.

Part Competency
Assessed
Instructions
1 Apply data extraction
methodologies
Locate research on LOS, death, birth, and infection rates within a hospital
by using the Internet or Kaplan University Library. Interpret the types of
data used for healthcare statistics by analyzing the formulas. Next, with
an understanding of the types of data necessary for clinical,
administrative, and financial reports, demonstrate knowledge of data
extraction methods by developing a literature review on the capture,
storage, and retrieval of healthcare data for a large hospital system. In
your literature review, make sure to indicate the considerations related to
data capture tools and technologies (i.e., forms, computer screens,
templates, and other health record documentation tools).
2 Apply principles of
research and clinical
literature evaluation to
improve outcomes
Consider that a large hospital–for which you serve as a Director of Health
Information–has ongoing issues with utilization rates. Use the Kaplan
University Library to locate peer-reviewed research on best practices with
hospital utilization. Apply knowledge-based research techniques to
compose a brief literature review on improving outcomes of hospital
utilization–including three (3) peer-reviewed studies published within the
last 5 years. Integrate into your response a reflection on each study’s
research methodology (i.e., qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods,
outcomes).
3 Perform quality
assessment including
quality management,
data quality, and
identification of best
practices for health
information systems
Continue your literature view with another section on data quality
assessment and integrity. Locate one (1) peer-reviewed study on disease
management process (i.e., case management, critical paths, and care
coordination); one (1) peer-reviewed study on outcomes measurement
(i.e., patient as patient, customer satisfaction, and disease specific); and
one (1) peer-reviewed study on patient and organization safety initiatives.
Differentiate three (3) best practices in performing quality assessment by
comparing and contrasting each approach.
4 Model policy
initiatives that
influence data
integrity
Based on your literature review, analyze data integrity policies and
procedures that could be relevant to a large hospital in your state. Model
these policies through examples on the influence on data integrity.
5 Analyze workflow
processes and
responsibilities to
meet organizational
needs
Analyze workflow reengineering and workflow design techniques by
critiquing three (3) peer-reviewed studies on workflow within a healthcare
setting. Place your analysis within the literature review.

6 Evaluate staffing
levels and
productivity, and
provide feedback to
staff regarding
performance
Search the literature for scholarly sources regarding staffing levels and
productivity within a healthcare setting. Surmise the best practices in
performance standards prevalent throughout the literature. Critique the
methods of staffing used to improve productivity within the literature
review. Next, reflect on how you would coach staff who show low levels of
productivity within a health information department.
7 Identify departmental
and organizational
survey readiness for
accreditation,
licensing, and/or
certification processes
In a separate section of your literature review, interpret ten (10)
accreditation standards that relate to utilization (i.e., TJC, NCQA, CARF,
CHAP, URAC, CoP, etc.). Provide examples that connect the
accreditation standards to departmental and organizational survey
readiness for accreditation, licensing, and/or certification processes.
