Purpose of this assignment
Engineering design is the process of following a design from initial client needs to final completed design ready for manufacture.
You need to follow this process, from receiving the client brief, creating a detailed specification, creating initial ideas, choosing
the final design and then creating a final design on a CAD package.
You have been asked to design the door to cover the luggage compartment of a commercial aircraft. A 3D model is available of
the frame that is in the fuselage of the aircraft. (Note: that the frame is flat whereas in use it would be curved. This has been
done to reduce the CAD skills required by you). Note that the door fits on the outside of the aircraft. You must design:
Catches that go into the frame to secure the door in place. One will not be enough. There must be a secondary system
that will lock the system just to make it failure proof.
The mechanical system that will raise the door to open. The power will be provided by an electric motor. The design
must ensure that reversing the polarity of the electric motor will not open the door.
The door, when in flight, must be able to withstand the pressure when the aircraft is at 41,000 ft and the pressure
inside the aircraft is at 7,000 ft with a suitable factor of safety.
You must provide details of the materials that will be used.
You will need to produce:
1. You need to find a client brief and then follow through the design process.
2. Write a detailed specification
3. Create 3 initial ideas
4. Determine the best idea against the specification (Matrix analysis)
5. Final design ideas (on CAD package) with models and engineering drawings
6. Perform a FEA on you the model you have designed.
7. Evaluate the ideas and determine improvements
8. Evaluate the CAD package and discuss (or show) other features and functions other than just creating CAD models and
There is a template available on Moodle and Google Classroom of the frame in the fuselage for you to use.
Task 1 (LO1.1)
Create a client brief for a problem or an item that needs to be designed. Discuss why the part is needed and what benefits will
there be to the customer.

Task 2 (LO1.2)
Pick out the main client’s needs; these could be in the form of a list.
Task 3 (LO1.3)
Research other systems.
Task 4 (LO2.1)
You need to produce a design specification for either the client brief attached of your choice.
You must identify the key features of the client brief.
From the key features produce a detailed design specification using the following headings.
Production methods & materials
Scale of production
Size and weight
Task 5 (LO2.2)
Create 3 initial ideas of the part. These should show some difference in the actual design, not just colour or material. These can
be good, detailed freehand sketches or CAD designs.
You will need to discuss each idea and the reasons why you have chosen specific features.
Task 6 (LO2.3)
Undertake a matrix analysis of the 3 initial ideas.
Determine which is the best design against your specification.
Task 7 (LO2.4, LO3.2)
Complete a final design of your component in the CAD software of your choice, using both solid models and engineering
Justify and review your final design against the specification and client brief. Identify any improvements or modifications that can

Explain how you created models and drawings on the CAD package. List what features you have used and how they work.
Using FEA, evaluate what the CAD package can do and how this can assist the design process.
Task 9 (LO2.5)
Create a detailed design report of your part. You can use the design template on Moodle and Google Classroom to help.
